  • Since the Walls didn't have a lot of money, they would move around from place to place. The Walls family lived in West Virginia, Nevada, and California for longer than most of their stops, and then the setting completely changed, when Jeannette decided to move to New York.
  • The dysfunctional marriage of Rex and Rose Walls is an over ll conflict that can be seen throughout the book that will eventually to much bigger consequences.
  • There is the internal conflict in Jeannette, as she has to decide between her family, and a better future.
  • There's also the conflict between the kids and their parents, as they begin to learn that they could truly have a better if they tried. The kids try to get the parents to be more responsible, and this causes many problems between the kids and their parents.
  • The climax of the story is when Jeannette leaves behind her family and moves to New York with her brother. 
  • The overall theme of the book is to never forget where you came from. Even after Jeannette and all the children eventually leave their parents, they keep in mind the way that they lived at one point, and they all change their lived for the better. The reader can truly learn that your past doesn't entirely affect your future, and to have improve your future, you must keep the past in mind.
