Tom Sawyer, tired of school and yearning for adventure, runs away with Joe Harper and Huckleberry Finn. They decide to become pirates and set sail.
"He never meant any harm, and he was the best-hearted boy that ever was..."
The young pirates land on an island in the middle of the Mississippi River. They set up camp and spend several days in and around their new hideout.
"Oh, boys, let's give it up. I want to go home."
The villagers notice that the boys are missing and go search for them. Suspecting that Tom and his friends have drowned in the river, they fire off several cannons in order to search for their bodies
Tom sneaks home to find grieving Aunt Polly praying for him. He feels pity for all the trouble he has caused but does not reveal himself.
The runaway boys eventually get bored and homesick. After a while, they decide to head back to St. Petersburg.
Tom and his friends stage a grand entrance at their own funeral. They lie in wait while the service starts then surprise all in attendance by "coming back to life."
