  • Theodora was an important part of Justinian’s rule because they ruled together. Her intelligence helped Justinian improve the Empire.
  • Justinian Rule/Code
  • Theodora even helped me in difficult situations. One time was during the Nika Revolt. Some Senators saw that as an opportunity to overthrow me.
  • I told him that it was better to die an emperor than to live as a nothing.  He decided to take my advice and because of that, his rule was safe.
  • Many countries used Justinian’s Code as the basis of their laws because they saw the value of a unified written set of laws for the entire country. They also borrowed concepts from the Code. For example, the United States used the Justinian Code as a basis for the Bill of Rights and for the concept of "innocent until proven guilty."
  • Justinian's Code is a code of laws that I published. It is the complete record of the Roman laws and definitions of legal terms. It was one set of laws for the entire empire. Some of the laws include Women's Rights, robbery, failure to pay debts, murder, and inheritance.

  • What is an icon? 
  • It is a religious work of art that is painted of a holy figure, usually on wood. They also then worship that icon.
  • Byzantine Art and Architecture
  • The Byzantine Empire preserved Roman and Greek ideas by writing them down. Education was important to them, so was philosophy, traditions, science, art, and culture. They also built and maintained churches. By passing down these things, they preserved Roman and Greek ideas. Also, scholars from the Byzantine Empire fled the area after the fall of Constantinople and brought the Roman and Greek arts, religion, science, philosophy and culture with them to other countries.

  • One problem within the Byzantine Empire that helped bring about its decline was that the emperors once relied on the peasants to join the military and pay taxes. However, when the wealthy started to take the land from the peasants and enslave them, the peasants could no longer pay their taxes or join the military. This caused the rulers to have less money from taxes and required them to pay military. Another problem was the spit of the churches between the east and the west. This was called  The Great Schism. These events left the Empire vulnerable for attacks.

  • Fall of the Byzantine Empire
  • The Byzantine Empire lasted a long time until 1453 when Turkish warriors invaded and took over. They brought their Islamic faith. They turned churches into mosques. Later, Rome broke up into smaller kingdoms. They soon went into war and many disease spread. This was called the "Dark Ages." This caused the an end to the Byzantine Empire.

  • We're going to turn these churches into mosques.We have to being in our Islamic faith. Come on Turks!
