"To be one of them. To travel in their midst, to come this close, and to have no one even cast her a wary glance."(209)
Progress Report #3: Theme By Brandon Vicheck
Theme Development #2
The major theme for this book is the choice between helping those you love for good or for bad. We see this occur mostly through the point of view of the main character, Nova. This is due to both her commitment to her dead uncle and her friendship with Adrian.
Theme Development #3
"A gunshot rang across the grass. The Detonator's head snapped back, hitting the boards of the theater."(583)
This theme first starts to develop when Nova joins the Renegades to gain inside information and meets Adrian. At first, she only has one agenda while there. However, she slowly forms a bond with Adrian and his team, causing her to eventually become less loyal to the anarchists and more loyal to the Renegades.
We first see Nova's allegiance falter when she is staking out a library with her team of Renegades. She sees an anarchist enter, and when she goes to investigate, a large conflict ensues. She fights on the side of the Renegades during this conflict, and ends up winning.
"Nova swallowed, staring at Ingrid as she paused on the front stoop of the library and looked back, in what was probably intended to give the Renegades a good look at her, but that also served to make her look extra suspicious as she slipped inside."(294-295)
Her allegiances seem to comepletely switch when her and another anarchist plan to fake their deaths. However, when it comes time to do this, she ends up actually killing her teammate rather tahn faking her death. This seems to cement her allegiances to the Renegades.
The theme resolves itself at the very end of the book, with a very large plot reveal. Because of this plot twist, it again reaffirms her allegiance to the Anarchists. It also sets up very well for a sequel.
