Storyboard Text

  • Hey, I'm Benjamin Gitlow and he's Alan Larkin
  • We're publishers of The Revolutionary Age, a newspaper in which we printed “The Left Wing Manifesto”
  • In it, we advocated for the overthrow of the U.S. government. But we were just exercising our freedom of the press right?
  • That's not what the New York City police thought!
  • We were convicted...
  • And our case eventually reached Supreme Court.
  • That's right, our case ended up here.
  • Yup! And though it didn't end so well for us, the case was a win for the people of America.
  • But how? And why?
  • You see, under the 14th Amendment (specifically the due process clause), the 1st Amendment isapplicable to the federal government AND state governments.
  • ?
  • So then how did it end?
  • Though the case did not end in our favor (our conviction was upheld), the Supreme Court's rule expanded 1st Amendment protections for individuals, specifically on the state level.
