  • Paraphrase When traveling through Baltimore the speaker noticed a local and, in an effort, to make friends he smiled at the local. But in return the local stuck his tongue out at the speaker and called them the n-word. From all things that happened within that period of time, that is the only memory he has from there.
  • Attitude/Tone/ConnotationThe tone of the poem is pensive. A gloomy tone would come in when he says that from all the things that happened there that is all that he remembers.
  • ShiftThe shift is noted due to the sentence breaking and lack of punctuation. Also, in line seven and eight the author uses the word “he” to describe companionship while in the ninth “his” is capitalized showing how the traveler felt insignificant.
  • TitleThe hypothesis of the title was fitting, the speaker's experience was so adversely impactful that it is all he remembers from his trip.
  • ThemeNegative memories can adversely affect one's outlook on life.
