The church and the clan initially remained segregated. This is until one day when 3 converts come into the village talking about gods...
The traditional gods are dead and impotent and we are prepared to defy them by burning all their shrines.
Outcasts of Mbanta, osu, come to the church one day after seeing how it welcomes twins. Other converts move away from them but do not protest until after the service
It's a disgrace to be associated with osu!
After the service converts object to the osu. Mr Kiaga, however, welcomes the outcasts and instructs them to shave their mark of shame (their dirty and tangled hair). One convert chooses to leave but Mr. Kiaga's firmness in the matter inspired other converts to stay with the church and accept the osu.
A year later, one of the zealous osu converts, Okoli is rumored to have killed the sacred python (the clan's most respected animal).
Let us not act like cowards. If a man comes into my hut and defecates on the floor, what do I do? Do I shut my eyes? No! I take a stick and break his head.
The clan's rulers and elders gather to decide the punishment of Okoli. Okonkwo believes clan should react with violence but elders opt to peacefully ostracize church members.
Okoli denies killing the python but falls ill and cannot speak for himself. When he dies before the day is over the clan takes it as reaffirmation in their gods.
