To understand what the Shah, Mohammad Reza, did, we should first understand what came before him.
The Shah before Mohammad Reza was his father, Reza Shah. He wanted to modernize Iran by engaging in oil trade with the West, which stared the White Revolution.
We are becoming more like the people I the West, and we are more secular.
Mohamad Reza wanted to follow in his father's foot steps to modernize Iran and grant more rights for workers and women. This angered the Islamic leaders.
I am trying to make Iran more modern but it isn't pleasing the people.
This reform caused unemployment which angered the people, yet through the whole thing the Shah made it look like he was helping.
Because he feared opposition, Mohammad established a secret police, the SAVAK, in 1957. They used brutal tactics to carry out Reza's wishes.
I even exiled Islamic leaders from Iran. This made the Muslims angry.
When Ayatollah Khomeini, an Islamic leader, returned from his exile with his followers, Shah Mohammad Reza was forced out of the country on January 16th, 1979.
