Many years ago there was a little Maori tribe in Heretaunga. But across the hilly plains in Wamimara lived a giant. They called him Te Mata O Rongokako. He set fire to there houses, stole their food and challenged the men to fight.
One cold wintery day, the Maori tribe leader told his people,"I am tired of fighting the mighty Te Mata O Rongokako and I will send my beautiful daughter, across the hilly plains to Wamimara to fall in love with Te Mata O Rongokako".
Wamimara was a beautiful place with soft sand and warm salt water. Hinerakau did not want to go, she was frightened, but she respected her father's wish! She went on her long journey across the hilly plains to Wamimara.
As soon as she got there she fell in love, she thought that Te Mata O Rongokako was beautiful. Rongokako loved Hinerakau so much that he wished to marry her! But the people of the Maori tribe were still angry, they had not forgiven Rongokako.
The chief understood his people and told Rongokako that he would have to do a series of tasks. This was a big task but Rongokako loved Hinerakau. He had gotten to the last hill. He took a huge bite, soiled filled his mouth. Then something terrible happened!
A huge piece of rock got stuck in Rongokako's throat. He swallowed and swallowed poor Rongokako fell to his knees he was dead! Hinerakau was so upset that Rongokako died that she threw herself off the cliff.
