Moshe the Beadle is taken along with other foreign Jews by the Nazis before the other residents are rounded up for the camps. Moshe manages to escape and make his way back to Sighet warn the others, but nobody believed him.
The Jews were transported by train to the concentration camps. On the train, there was a lady screaming she saw a fire but since there was no fire everyone thought she was crazy. However later on, while still n the train, there was a fire and everyone was shocked. Even kids were being thrown into the fire.
Elie and his father stick together throughout the camps. They were forced to work or else they will get burned, shot, tortured, or even killed. In order to be with his dad a kid told Elie to lie about his and his father age (Elie was too young and his father was too Old).
Some innocent Jews were being hung for no reason. These German SS officers thought of any reason to punish the prisoners. A teenager was also caught stealing food and got hung.
The Jews were forced to walk long distances even in bad weather. They were told to run from Auschwitz to Gleiwitez (which is about 12.5 miles). Even if you wanted to stop really quickly to get some air, you would be shot and killed immediately.
Everything Elie did in this experience was for his dad. Knowing that his presence wasn't with him anymore made him feel like still pushing to survive at the camp was for nothing. His father suffered from an illness called dysentery. Elie completely lost his hope and motivation in life.
