It all started when President Lincoln was assassinated by John W. Booth.
After the tragic death of the president, Andrew Johnson comes to take the job (he was Lincoln's vice-president)
The act is passed!
NOPE! We overrule you.
May 1865, Johnson proposes a plan for reconstruction which was called the Proclamation Of Amnesty. He did this because there had been a struggle between the Legislative and Executive branches over who would direct reconstruction.
Johnson is found NOT GUILTY
Tensions heighten between the President and Congress because of race riots.
March 1867, Congress (the new one) passes the first reconstruction act. Then Johnson vetoes the act, but it is quickly overridden by the congress.
May 1868, The senate fails to convict Johnson of the impeachment by only 1 vote. Andrew was acquitted of all the charges that were filed in the impeachment.
