" You have always been a good friend to me," said Bernard. " Thankee!"
"You will be haunted," resumed the Ghost, "by Three Spirits."
"What is the matter," asked the Spirit.
" I wish... but its to late now."
"Nothing, there was a boy singing a Christmas carol at my door last night. I should like to give him something, that's all."
By Francie Mitchell The recreation of A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens
"Spirit, tell me if little Larry will live?"
There once was a white dove, Bernard Bandett, but he acted as if he was a crow. He was a grumpy, cold bird. He owned his own business with his friend Billy Jefferson. But Billy Jefferson has been dead for seven harvests. Billy was a cruel man, and all he cared about was money.Bernard was just as greedy as old Billy, even during the Christmas season. He stayed perched in his office tree as if he did not feel the icy breeze swaying the branches beneath him. Bernard not only turned away Christmas tweeters and friendly birds asking for worms for the poor. He turned them away in a brutal manner that left the whole forest to dislike this monster of a bird. It was Christmas Eve, Bernard was alone on his flight home and thought he saw Billy’s face in the clouds, he shook it off and proceeded. When he arrived home, he lied in his nest. The crickets began to chirp louder than he had ever heard, but it was winter all the crickets are dead. He was frightened. He heard a loud peck against his bush, it sounded like a woodpecker. It was the spirit ofBilly, his old Friend who had died, Billy exclaimed that Bernard would be visited by three spirits, each at the stroke of one for three nights. Billy told Bernard the ghosts are coming to save his soul. He must be visited so he doesn’t have to suffer in the afterlife like Billy.
Bernard Bandet 2001-2040
" ... a merry Christmas to everybody! A happy New year to all the world ! ..."
Sure enough at the stroke of one a bird's spirit appeared. It was the Ghost of Christmas Past, he announced that they would embark on a journey of Christmases Bernard has experienced. They appeared in the middle of a field, were Bernard was sent to live as a child. He was all alone, and Bernard began to cry for his little self. Bernard felt grief for the young boy he had been so cruel to the day before. He was evil to the boy, just like his father was to him. His father left him at field school over Christmas all alone.
Merry Christmas to All Love Bernard
Bernard was ready for the second Ghost, he was determined to not be startled. The next Ghost was the Ghost of Christmas Present. He was taken to his nephews Christmas party. His Nephew never gave up hope for his uncle and urges him to come yearly. But Bernard never does. They then goes to his employees house, his son is very ill, Little Larry. Bernard had no idea, he wants to help the poor family. Their feast was meager but they each family member was joyful! How?
"I see a vacant spot in the poor tree-corner, and a crutch without an owner. If these shadows remain unaltered by the Future , the child will die."
The third bird Spirit, was a slinder black bird. This Ghost did not speak, it simply took him to the rushing river. There Bernard heard men talking of the death of a wealthy bird. Then to the tree exchange where a farrow sold the dead mans belongings for worms. Then it took him to a grave cave. Bernard fluttered towards the stone to read his name engraved upon it. Bernard collapsed and began to beg for this fate to not be true. Bernard was determined to do better, for this could not be his fate.
"Spirit! hear me ! I am not the man I was. I will not be the man I must have been but for this intercource . Why show me this , if I am past all hope?"
The next morning, Bernard dashed to the edge of his bush and fluttered his wings uncontrollably. He was alive, he was alive and it was Christmas day ! Bernard was ready to be a new bird. The night before something had changed in Bernard. All he wanted to do was to fly though the clouds shouting merry Christmas to all. He did just that on his way to help give his worker a proper Christmas feast and a raise in his daily worms to help Little Larry's medical conditions. He even celebrated Christmas with his Nephew for the first time.
