Storyboard Text

  • 11 participants who had already experienced a commissurotomy prior to the study collected by opportunity sampling. All had a history of extreme epilepsy.
  • One participant put in a private room with another person testing both hemispheres.
  • Visual information was presented to the participant by projecting images on a screen. Tactile information would be presented by either the left or the right hand, or to both hands without patients being able to see what the object was.
  • The subject covered one eye and was told to look at a fixation point in the centre of the screen. An image was projected for 1/10th of a second on either the left or right of the fixation point which would send the image to either the far left or far right visual field respectively.

  • First screen would send image of key to right side of brain. Second screen would end image of key to left side of brain. Both fields: subject would look at fixation point while both pictures were shown simultaneously- key to left side, apple to right side. Participants were then asked what they had seen and would typically say 'key' although had no conscious awareness of seeing anything else. They would then be given a pen with left hand and asked to draw what they had seen, and would typically draw an apple.
