Storyline of Mexican-American War leading up to the Wilmot Proviso
WE WANT YOUR LAND!!!!
The Americans and the Mexicans began fighting each other in the Mexican-American War in 1846.
After we win this war, we shall take all the land and make it our territory for westward expansion.
President James K. Polk strived to expand the United States westward, so his goal was to win the war and acquire Mexico's former lands.
Perhaps even make it slave territory...
On August 8, 1846, a congressman from Pennsylvania named David Wilmot proposed "Wilmot Proviso", an amendment that bans any of the new territory from becoming "slave territory".
I have a feeling that the government will make the new territory "slave". I cannot let that happen!
This amendment shall discontinue the expansion of slavery!
David Wilmot introduced this amendment to the House of Representatives, where they will discuss it among the divided House.
Here you go!
Thank you, kind sir. The House will be discussing this for some time...
Eventually, the amendment was narrowly passed by the House but did not pass the Senate. The amendment was deemed unsuccessful.
Yes! We got this amendment passed!
This amendment will never pass this Senate!!!
This amendment stirred more conflict in the U.S. since it heightened the issue of making "slave states" vs "free states". It is another proposal that threatened slavery and continued the divide between the North and the South.
We need more slave states! Slavery must continue!
