Stuffed Animal Collection of Rabbits in her bedroom
The mirror is a significant symbol throughout the novel because she puts it in the closet inside her bedroom. She had this mirror outside of the closet, but then she put it in the closet facing the wall because she felt insecure, and didn't want to look at herself.
Janitors closet at School
This is Melinda's bedroom, and it is decorated with a purple floor, and bunnies everywhere because she mentionied how she thought her room was one of a little girl. Also, before she stopped being friends with Rachel, Nicole, and Ivy, they redecorated her room the way they wanted it to look. This is an important symbol because it shows how she is passive in the way of keeping it as it is, or, how she doesnt care enough to make it her own.
Turkey Bone Project
In this picture, there is an apple tree that symbolizes when Melinda was little, how she would always go apple picking with her parents. She remembers these moments fondly, and realizes how much her family has grown distant because Melinda does not talk as much or interact with her parents, which is the reason why they don't participate in family activities as often.
Science Frog Experiment
The janitors closet symbolizes a safe haven for Melinda. Here, Melinda is outside her "sanctuary," which is a custodian closet. She relaxes here, and relieves herself from stress inside and outside of school. Also there is a poster of Maya Angelou covering the mirror because she finds her inspiring, and Melinda does not want to see her reflection because she is insecure.
The turkey bone project, is something Melinda made in art class after Thanksgiving. In this piece she expresses how she is in a great deal of pain, and feels closed in, and helpless. She shows this by putting a barbie head enclosed inside broken turkey bones. The head has a piece of tape over its mouth symbolizing Melinda's inability to speak, or communicate how she is feeling with others.
During the science experiment when Melinda was told to cut open the frog, she relates to the frog in a way because she thinks that the frog is helpless, and she is hurting it while the frog is unable to fight for itself. This reminds her of how she was helpless, and unable to defend herself when Andy Evans raped her, causing Melinda to faint.
