  • many people disagreed on slavery the south wanted slavery but the north didnt. one of the major events that led to the civil war was the overruling that slaves are not aloud to sue there ways to freedom and slaves were aloud in the new territories and states.

  • those who are in favor of seceding from the union voted 208 to 89.
  • the northerners were at the heart over the dispute to involve slavery but unfortunately the southerners needed slaves to help them with farming work and just work in general.

  • The nullification crisis started in the early 1830's it was a dispute over tariffs. the north supported high tariffs on imported European products in order to support their manufacturing industry. northerners didnt want another slave state but then the Missouri compromise was created which allowed slaves in Missouri but then also split Massachutsets into two states creating Maine which was a non-slave state.
  • in 1861 a debate in the Georgia General Assembly focused on whether or not Georgia should secede from the union or not. The leading secessionists were joseph e. brown and Robert Toombs. The pro- union view gained support from the northern counties. non slave owners were represented by Alexander Stephens who gave a speech against slavery. In the end the General Assembly voted 208 to 89 in favor of seceding from the union.
  • The Missouri compromise congress forbade slavery north of the 36 degrees 30' parallel. The compromise of 1850 allowed the fugitive slave act which guaranteed the return of any runaway slave to their owners of the were caught in the north. while in debate over the compromise of 1850 Georgia politicians were deciding if the state should accept the terms of the compromise. 4 years after the compromise was passed The Kansas Nebraska act went into place which repealed the missouri compromise which allowed slaves north of the 36 degrees 30' parallel.
  • The final event that led to the civil war was the election of 1860. Abraham Lincoln was elected president. Abraham was against slavery so he did not allow it which caused some southern states to secede from the union. The first state to secede was South Carolina.
