Nike employ a lot of people making it the largest foreign employer
Vietnam government attack Nike
Treat our people with more respect
The first Nike factory in Vietnam opened in 1995. Vietnam was one of the poorest countries in the world. People there had a reputation for hard work and didn't get paid much. This was easy for Nike to make a lot of money.
Nike's bad treatment to workers
why can't we be treated with more respect.
Nike became Vietnam's largest foreign employer with ten factories employing 40,000 people. However in then late 1990's Nike made some mistakes.
Why did Nike make an investment in Vietnam?
The Vietnamese government attacked Nike for its practices. Nike were in the newspaper every day. Some stories were fake but the stories reached overseas. Nike said if the attacks continued it would leave.
Many pressure groups have tried to persuade Nike to improve workers conditions. many consumer groups want to see fair treatments for workers overseas. Nike now argues they have improved factory conditions, working and wages but this may not be true.
Nike chose to make an investment in Vietnam because in Vietnam, there were no trade unions, or strikes for higher pay, so wages were low. The communist government were keen to develop exports.
