Storyboard Text

  • "Mashah came home with stories that in rich people's homes they had silver knives and forks, separate, for each person." pg. 5
  • You won't believe how the rich people live, I saw with my own two eyes that they eat with their own silver knives and forks, for each person.
  • "In america, a man can get rich quick if he only has a head for business." pg. 111
  • Honey you gotta understand that if you wanna be successful you gotta have the mind for business.
  • "In america, there is no need to be poor, if you only got brains and money to begin something." pg. 112
  • There is no need to be poor in america, as long as you got brains and money you can begin anything.
  • ?
  • This really shows Mashah's character on being a visionary dreamer and being jealous of what they don't have, and what are her desires and how having your own utensils really is a big deal for her and also shows how she feels of her families poverty situation and what her american dream means to her.
  • "I had always before my eyes a vision of myself in college, mingling every day with the inspired minds of great professors and educated higher-ups." pg. 184
  • I wish I could go to college to really experience how it feels to be in college with the higher-ups.
  • Fathers conversation with mother how if you have a mind for business you can become very successful which shows us fathers want for the american dream are to start a business and live up to that dream which he explains.
  • "So these are the real americans, I thought, thrilled by the lean, straight bearing of the passers-by." pg. 210
  • So this is how the real americans are lean, and confident as they pass by.
  • Father also adds that there is no reason to be poor, as long as you got the brains and money to start something which shows us how father is not that ignorant and has real ideas on the american dream, and how he feels that is the reason to succeed in this country.
  • "If only I could have taken out my diploma and held it over my head for all to see! I was a college graduate!" pg. 237
  • All I felt inside was taking out my diploma and waving it over my head because of how exited I was for myself.
  • Blah Blah Blah
  • Sara envisions herself being a college student and embracing the lifestyle that most privileged americans get handed to them. This is very important to not her but the theme as well because it really shows her passion for wanting the american dream and how much of an impact it has on her.
  • We really get into the mindset of what sara thinks of and how she wants to have that same feeling as the people passing-by, because it reflects how comfortable the passers are and how the description sara gives us on them shows how they don't have to worry about money problems and are essentially living the american dream, which is brought to them and not worked for as hard as immigrants have to.
  • Sara is so joyed that she finally got her diploma and is proud to have achieved her american dream which comes full circle from the beginning of the story because sara's whole purpose was to achieve satisfaction and success, and with determination she accomplished what everyone else wanted in the family and that was the american dream, and to know that they reached their goal
