Aim - Wanted to test the reliability of mental health diagnosis to see if medical professionals could tell the sane from the insane in a clinical setting.
8 Pseudopatients rang the admissions office of 12 psychiatric hospitals - across 5 different states.
They would say that they were hearing voices. They said they were not familiar voices and they were the same-sex.
Once admitted they immediately acted normally with no mention of the symptoms again.
They acted normally and would do everything asked of them except they didn't swallow any medication. They would make notes on what happened and would only be able to leave once discharged.
Each pseudopatient was admitted with a diagnosis of schizophrenia and was released with a diagnosis of schizophrenia in remission. They were never detected as being fake by the medical staff.
