Luther was kidnapped by Fred the Wise and kept in Wartburg castle from 1521-22. It was to keep him safe from the papacy.
Looks like I'll have to translate the New Testament into German to pass the time...
I think I'll change my name to Junker George to be inconspicuous.
In Dec 1521, the Zwickau Phrophets arrived in Wittenberg presenting extremist ideas. For example saing people should be baptised as adults, like Jesus was.
Luther's ideas are too cautious, we need to radicalise his philosophy.
On Christmas day , 1521, the services were delivered in German.
Gott, unser Retter
Carlstadt and Zwilling (supporters of Luther but radicalised his ideas) led to iconoclasm. They set fire to Augustinian Friary and burnt: images, banners, crucifixes and candles.
We want change, Luther isn't being socially or politically active enough.
March 1522 - Luther returns to Wittenberg to stop the extremism and bloodshed. The prophets were later expelled.
Guys you've got to be kidding me! Stop destroying things. I'm going to give a sermon on how you all are wrong. and I'm so charasmatic everyone will support me.
Luther's sermon covered a few concession (known as Wittenberg tumults) which were important because: 1- in stopping Carstadt/ prophets he showed his conservative approach to change/activism/extremism.
2- I made a few concessions like taking Eucharist's of both kind and it opened my eyes to how my absence had created a vacuum e,g, for radical views.
