Drama prep- the story of Oedipus Rex

Storyboard Text

  • 12 years before the action of the play, Oedipus was made King of Thebes as he defeated the sphinx, freeing the citizens from his evil reign. As the former king Laius had been killed shortly beforehand, Oedipus won the hand of Laius' previous wife Jocasta.
  • What goes on four feet in the morning, two feet at noon, and three feet in the evening?
  • Why man, of course!
  • The story play off in Oedipus' Castle in Thebes where he is the king. The citizens of the city beg Oedipus to lift the plague that threatens to destroy the city. Oedipus calls on his brother-in-law Creon who has seen the oracle.
  • Help us, Oedipus...
  • Help us, Oedipus...
  • Oedipus is agonised by his fate as he realises that he killed his father and lay with his mother. He ran into teh palace, only to find the queen had killed herself. Disgraced and distraught, he removed the broaches form her gown and rakes out his eyes, so he can no longer see the misery he has caused.
  • Creon announces that the oracle told him to discover and punish the murderer if he wants to save the city from the plague. Oedipus sets about trying to solve the mystery... He summons the blind prophet Tiresias, who blames Oedipus for killing the previous king. Oedipus is furious.
  • Oedipus consults his wife, Jocasta who tells him to ignore the prophercy as King Laius was killed by his son at the crossroads. Oedipus becomes distressed by this as just before he came to Thebes he killed a man who resembled Laius at the crossroads. They send off for the only known survivor, a shepherd.
  • I think you shouldn't worry!
  • What do you think, dearest wife Jocasta?
  • Then amessenger bought news that king Polybus had died- King Oedipus rejoices but the learns that Polybus was not his real father. Oedipus tracks down a sheperd who tells him that he was the son of Laius and Jocasta and he found Oedipus on Mount Cithaeron and took pity on him.
  • Poor boy...
  • What have I done???
