We are introduced to Mr Utterson. "Mr Utterson the lawyer was a man if a rugged countenance, that was never lighted by a smile".
Mr Utterson and Mr Enfield meet and find a mysterious door with nothing else. "The door, which was equipped with neither bell nor knocker, was blistered and distained".
Enfield tells a story of how Hyde tramples a little girl. "for the man trampled calmly over the child's body and left her screaming on the ground."
Enfield follows Hyde to collect a cheque from someone. "and the person that drew the cheque is the very pink of the properties, celebrated too, and (what makes it worse) one of your fellows who do what they call good. "
Utterson and Hyde meet for the first time."But he had an approved tolerance for others; sometimes wondering, almost with envy, at the high pressure of spirits involved in their misdeeds; and in any extremity inclined to help rather than to reprove."
Mr Hyde attacks an old man called Danvers carew for no apparent reason. He was spotted by a maid. "Mr. Hyde broke out of all bounds and clubbed him to the earth. And next moment, with ape-like fury, he was trampling his victim under foot "
