Storyboard Text

  • Hi! I'm here to tell you what a DNS is and what it does!
  • It is one of, if not, the most important aspect of the Internet.
  • DNS stands for "Domain Name Service".
  • If we were to shut it down, literally the entire Internet would collapse!
  • When you are typing a web address into Google, for example, "www.Example.com",
  • And that one "dot" makes all the difference.
  • What Google is actually looking for is "www.Example.com." It actually adds an extra "dot" that you didn't type.
  • It then goes on a journey, trying to find the IP address for "www.Example.com."
  • It then directs it to the COM TLD Name Servers and it asks the same question, however this time it recognises the "example.com" part.
  • The browser then asks the operating system where "www.example.com." is, but they don't know, so they ask the Resolving Name Server where "www.example.com." is.
  • They won't know, but they will recognise the "com" part, or the Top Level Domain(TLD), is.
  • It then takes you to the "Example.com" TLD Name Servers.
  • It asks again, but this time, they know, so it tells the Browser that the IP address is (As an example): 1.2.3.4
  • The Browser then tells Google to go to the IP address of 1.2.3.4
  • And that's how Domain Names work! Thank you for reading this! I hope you have learned something!
