  • We took advantage of the limited amount of farmland and abundant rainfall to grow wet rice.
  • We are the traders from Japan that go around and trade with different people so that we can get food from them or other resources that we need to build with.
  • Women were allowed to remarry after divorce.
  • Aristocratic women were prominent in court. Some even became known for artistic of literary talents!
  • We also believed that the spirits of our ancestors were present in the air around us.
  • We worshiped spirits, called Kami, who we thought to live in trees, rivers, and mountains.
  • Among aristocrats, one section was the Zen. Their beliefs of self discipline became part of the samurai code. Two main schools of Zen teach that nirvana comes from enlightenment or through meditation.
  • Prose fiction was merely "vulgar gossip" brought about by Murasaki Shikibu.
