  • Frederick Douglass was a leading African-American abolitionist and persuaded the North to allow African Americans to fight in the army.
  • Battle of Antietam
  • Stonewall Jackson was a Confederate General who lead troops into the first and second battles of Bull Run.
  • The Battle of Gettysburg
  • The first battle of the Civil War. April 1861
  • Siege of Vicksburg
  • The Union got the plans of the South's attack from a spy and prepared for the attack. This was the bloodiest battle in American history. The Union won, September 17, 1862.
  • The Union sealed the Confederates fate on July 4th, 1863 with this battle. 
  • When the North gained control of Vicksburg, they gained control of the Mississippi River and divided the southern states.
