The NWMP is a Canadian police force which was created to stop the whiskey trade and all illegal liquor trafficking among First Nations
Hello! My name is Willam and I'm part of the North West Mountain Police, also known as the NWMP. We just got established in this beautiful year of 1873.
Currently a lot of conflicts are arising.....
People are fighting and it isn't pretty. The Catholics are fighting the Protestants, the French are fighting with the English, the Métis are fighting the Europeans, and the government is fighting with the settlers. Some of these disagreements lead to things like the jubilee riots.
THE POPE IS THE HIGHEST AUTHORITY!!
NO, THE KING IS
But one conflict between the NWMP and the Métis would forever change the way the Métis cause was perceived
My friends, I am trying to grasp the promises which [the federal government] made me. I see my hand closing again and again, but I can find nothing in it. They offered me a spot as a reserve, but since I see that they are not going to be honest, I am afraid to take a reserve. They have given me to choose between several small reserves, but I feel sad to abandon the liberty of my own land when in return I will not get half of what they promised me.
As you can tell by this quote from Chief Big Bear the First Nations and the NWMP/the government didn't get along all that well
They also dealt with issues like the whiskey trade. The illegal trade of whiskey in the First Nations communities is mostly due to the excessive amount of alcoholism within the Aboriginal community.
The NWMP dealt with civilian issues such as robberies
STOP RIGHT THERE CRIMINAL
MY PURSE HAS BEEN STOLEN!!!!
The NWMP also dealt with Métis issues such as the Red River Rebellion, which was a conflict that lasted from 1869–1870, where the Métis fought against their oppressive government
I hereby sentence you, Louis Riel, to death on the charge of treason
The 1800's weren't exactly the safest place to live, and the NWMP helped ensure that everyone felt relatively safe. They also attempted to help the First Nations but that backfired due to the dependence on alcohol.
The Cypress Hill Massacre also shows how much the NWMP was needed. The Cypress Hill Massacre was a bloody massacre in which American Bison Hunters killed 20 Métis peoples and 1 wolfer, over a stolen horse. This massacre made the government realize just how important the NWMP would be towards keeping the peace, because if they had been there, the massacre might've not taken place at all.
