Welcome to the Byzantine Empire! My name is King Philip III. We are currently standing in front of my castle! This is my faithful knight Henry.
Castles were built to protect monarchs from attacks. Knights were in charge of protecting the monarchs and attacking other castles.
Our economy was first based on feudalism. It included a mutual relationship between the ruler and his subjects. Under a feudal contract, a lord gave his vassal a fief, or a piece of land. Peasants and buildings were included in the fief.
My job is to protect the vassal. In return, the vassal provides me with loyalty, military service, money, and advice.
It then became based on a manorial system. A manor was the main house of a large estate. The manor system made peasants dependent on their lords. The peasants provided labor while the lords, like myself, provided land and protection.
The church is very important. We can only go to heaven if the Roman Catholic Church lets us. Peasants pay a tithes to the church every year. Failure to pay these tithes would lead to their souls going to hell after they died.
