  • an example of symbolism in the passage, " The Lottery" is the stones that were used to represent the innocent pain that will be delt with. The stones were used to hit Mrs.Hutchinsons to death slowly and painfully. Though she was innocent some towns people did not think innocent of it. 
  • Figures of Speech
  • "graves took the child's hand and removed the flooded paper from the tight fist and held it with a little Dave stood next to him and looked at him worriedly." The reader can imagine the look of fear rush across the child"s face in confusion. It describes how the child holds it in a tight fist . This is because the environment surrounding the child is very tense making him uncomfortable.
  • Tone and Theme
  • "where the breeze caught them then lifted them" stated the passage "The Lottery". This text is a example of personification. The text is implying that the wind lifted the person up and moved them. The wind is given human like characteristics .
  • The tone/theme of the story "The Lottery" was there was no more love, mercy between the towns people besides themselves. They stoned a innocent woman, Mrs.Hutchins over a raffle ticket. The theme is very dark and close-minded.
