in the election of 1824 to the surprise of many ,the house elected john quincy adams over rival andrew jackson. it was widley believed that clay, convinced congress to elect adams, who then made clay his secretary of state. Jacksons supporters denounced this as "corrupt bargain"
the "Tariff of Abominations" was a protective tariff passed by congress of the united states on may 19, 1828, designed to protect industry in the northern united states. The reaction in the south would lead to the nullification crisis that began in late 1832. The tariff marked a high point of U.S. tariffs.
