Storyboard Description

Talmadge, Herman, and Thompson all want to be governor

Storyboard Text

  • When the white primary was declared unconstitutional, Eugene Talmadge was running for office. He told his voters and supporters that he would find a way to bring back the white primary. This made many white men vote in favor of Talmadge.
  • I promise to bring back the white primary if its the death of me!
  • In December of 1946, Herman Talmadge passed away before he could take office. His death caused the three governors controversy between Lieutenant Governor Melvin Thompson, Eugene son Herman, and current governor Ellis Arnold
  • I'm sorry to report that Eugene Talmadge has passed.
  • Herman Talmadge, Eugene Talmadge's son, recieved the most write-in votes during the election. The Georgia General Assembly also chose Herman to be governor.
  • I deserve to be governor because I received the most write in votes and the General Assembly chose me. ME!
  • Melvin Thompson was Lieutenant Governor when Eugene died, but the Georgia Constitution was unclear on who was supposed to take office. Thompson believed he should be in office.
  • While, yes, the Georgia State Constitution is unclear about who should be governor, I do believe that I shall be governor because as already Lieutenant Governor, I shall cover the rest of Eugene's term.
  • The current governor, Ellis Arnall, was inelegiable to serve another term as governor, but he refused to leave office until the problem was solved
  • I may not be allowed to serve another term as governor, but I am not letting the office sit open until this issue is resolved.
  • Finally, after all of the controversy settled, Melvin Thompson was elected by the Supreme Court to become Governor. The Supreme Court also ruled that if a Governor-elect passes before being sworn in, the Lieutenant governor holds office. Thompson was to remain in office until a special election was held.
  • I have become governor for you, Georgia! I will hold office until a special election is held. The Supreme Court ruled that the Lieutenant Governor will take office if the Governor-elect passes before being sworn in. God bless you all!
