Storyboard Text

  • Hernando De Soto was born in Spain around the year 1500. His family had little to no money.
  • Will you provide the ship and crew for my voyage to the New World in hopes to find gold? I have sailed before.
  • De Soto asked the king and queen of Spain if they would provide the money and ship for his voyage to find gold.
  • Well of course, but we want three things in return. Gold, claim land for Spain, and spread our religion
  • On May 25th, 1539 De Soto and his men landed in what is present day Tampa Bay, Florida.
  • LAND HO! MOVE AHEAD!!
  • While de Soto was exploring the southeast coast of present day U.S., he came across the Mississippi river. He is now known as the man who discovered it.
  • Hernando also found the North American Indians, which he treated like unspeakably bad. He took many of them back to Spain as slaves, and the others he would abuse. Sometimes he would even kill them.
  • On May 21st, 1542 Hernando died of a fever in Louisiana. Many of his men had already died from battles with natives or were sick. De Soto was buried in the Mississippi river by his men, in honor of him founding it.
  • HERE LIES HERNANDO DE SOTO
  • Goodbye de Soto! You will be missed dearly.
