  • Reverend Hooper demonstrates signs of a "secret sin". He appears in town with a black veil covering his face.

  • Reverend Hooper is using his black veil to call attention to the tendency of people to keep their sin and shame secret. 
  • Falling Action
  • Reverend Hooper wears his black veil despite his congregation gossiping about him. He does not tell people why he wears it either.
  • Resolution
  • Reverend Hooper is on his death bed and Mr. Clark prays he will let them take off his veil after all this time wearing it. Then, Mr.Clark attempts to remove it.
  • Reverend Hooper refuses to let anyone take off his veil, his was going to be wife Elizabeth, respects his wishes and doesn't let anyone remove his veil.
  • The mystery of the Ministers black veil reminds people of their own sin, secrets, and shame, so they rejected him. He then dies a lonely death.
