Storyboard Text

  • Wow, not many people go to school, I need to change this.
  • This is what some of the first schools looked like, sometimes they had to fit over 60 kids in a small building like this.
  • We need more education for our schools!
  • When Horace Mann was a kid he only went to school for 10 weeks out of the year. He was lucky because most kids didn't go to school, if you went to school your parents were from a rich family. Also, women didn't get education and blacks didn't get education. When Horace Mann became and adult he wanted to make sure everyone gets and education
  • We Dont want blacks in our schools.
  • The state of New York listened to Mann and set up public elementary schools in every town as early as 1820. This was a very big step for Mann.
  • I think you should let a black into your school.
  • Horace became Massachusetts state supervisor of education. He spoke out to many people on the importance of education. Citizens in Massachusetts responded to Mann's message so they voted to pay taxes for public education.
  • Still one problem Horace faced was that no black people were in public schools. SO many people wanted them to be included so they faught and they eventually got black people into schools.
  • In 1833, Prudence Candall admitted a black student into their school, several white parents took their kids out of that school. Horace Mann wanted her to do that so that more blacks would go into school.
  • I will admit a black into my school.
  • Horace Mann has left a very good legacy on American education. His reform movement accomplished setting up schools in every city. His reform also let girls get the same education as boys. This has impacted todays society becasue if he didnt do his reform we might not have to go to school and learn.
