Narrator Geoffrey Crayon relates a local legend about Captain Kidd, a pirate said to have buried treasure in a swamp near Boston.
One day, in 1727, a miserly man named Tom Walker walks through the swamp, where he meets a black man whom he recognizes as the devil, also known as Old Scratch.
In response, the devil places a fingerprint upon Tom’s forehead and leaves a mark.
Hello Tom, Ill give you the buried treasure, but on one condition. You will have to give me your soul
I agree to make the deal.
Tom later that night decide to refuse the deal because he didnt want to please his wife. who has treated him so horribly
tom you have to make the deal with the devil
I wont accept the deal
Tom's wife tool all the expensive stuff from home and went to make a deal with the devil. The devil didnt accept the deal and killed her.
I wont accept the deal.
I offer you to make the deal with me instead of Tom.
Tom would you like to be a usurer, a person who gives out loans and charges high interest rates
Tom was relieved that his wife died and decided to make the deal.
I'll do it
tom has become rich and involved in the church, he hasn’t changed fundamentally. He is still miserly. When accused of taking a land jobber’s money, he parsimoniously exclaims, “the devil take me if I have earned a farthing!” The devil almost immediately appears at Tom’s door with a large black horse, upon which Tom is placed and then carried away.
