  • First, tell me how Laios looked, and tell me how old he was.
  • He was tall, his hair just touched With white; his form was not unlike your own.
  • I think that I myself may be accurst By my own ignorant edict.
  • You speak strangely. It makes me tremble to look at you, my King.
  • Was the King lightly escorted, or did he ride With a large company, as a ruler should?
  • There were five men with him in all.
  • Who told you how it happened?
  • Oedipus starts having suspicions that he might have been the one that killed King Laius. Jocasta also says that Laius looked similar to Oedipus, hinting at their relationship as father and son.
  • A household servant, The only one to escape.
  • [He] begged that I would send him away to the frontier district where only the shepherds go.
  • And is he still A servant of ours?
  • Oedipus starts to realize that he is cursed, and that Teiresias may be correct after all.
  • Can he be called back quickly?
  • Easily. But why?
  • Oedipus asks how Laius was escorted and how he rode, because he once had killed someone on the road. He asks to see if what happened to him in the past lines up with Laius' death.
  • I have taken too much upon myself without enquiry; therefore I wish to consult him.
  • Oedipus asks where the servant is, so that they may fetch him and question him.
  • Oedipus wishes to question the servant to get more information about Laius' death.
  • Oedipus says that he gotten too much information without asking anyone else for help or information, so he wishes to consult the servant.
