Polonius reports to the King and Queen of his view on Hamlet's behavior. He believes Hamlet is mad , and that his madness is due to his love for Ophelia. He descrbes their secret relationship and shows Hamlet's love letter for proof. Polonius offers a plan of using Ophelia as bait to detect if that is the reason for his madness.
Hamlet enters and pretends that he doesn't know Polonius. However, his words hint that he knows a lot about him and his schemes. Polonius is impressed by his intelligence and analysis, but still thinks he is crazy.
