Storyboard Text

  • Stereotypes are hurtful!
  • Race is a concept made up by society in order to categorize groups of people with similar physical features. Race is unscientific, contrary to popular belief.
  • He's black, he must have done it!
  • Racism is the belief that a particular race is superior or inferior. Racism often leads to unfair treatment to certain racial groups. In TKAMB, black people are on the bottom of the social class pyramid, because of racism.
  • Survival of the fittest!
  • Darwin was speaking in biological terms...
  • Stereotypes are oversimplified assumptions about a particular group of people. They can be racial, gender based, religious, or even based around one's sexual orientation. They are always harmful, as they pigeonhole certain groups to expected behavior.
  • In TKAMB Tom Robinson is convicted of rape by a jury solely consisting of white men. All of these white men also believe that black people are inferior to white people. This is an example of racial discrimination.
  • Social Darwinism is a theory which applied Charles Darwin's theory of biological evolution to social theory. It became a way to justify unequal treatment of different groups of people, due to the notion that the fittest would survive in society.
  • Overall race and racism are major issues in TKAMB and are still major issues in 2016. Whether it be stereotypes, racial discrimination, or even social Darwinism, racism is still prevalent on earth.
