  • The compromise of 1850 was passed, making California a free state but also,  declaring the fugitive slave act, which forced free states to return runaway slaves to their owners. 
  • Fugitive slave act/Underground Railroad
  • As a response to the fugitive slave act, a group of abolitionists formed the Underground Railroad, a network of "conductors" who would hide fugitive slaves and help them reach freedom in Canada
  • The Sack of Lawrence

  • A group Led by John Brown, an abolitionists who believed that other abolitionists were killed at the Sack of Lawrence, went to Pottawatomie creek to seek revenge on people who were pro-slavery.
