Setting: Cottage, River. The narrator, a 14 year old,has fallen for a beautiful 17 year old girl named Sheila Mant. He tries anything to get her attention likediving into the water while she's tanning.
Finally, he gets the nerve to walk up and talk to her while she is playing softball. He asks her to go by canoe to watch a band at a fair. Surprisingly, she agreed.
He loads up his canoe, and without even thinking grabs his fishing pole. After he picks up Sheila, hehooks into the biggest bass of his life.
Now, the narrator is faced with a tough decision. Does he let the biggest bass of his life go so Sheila doesn't know, or does he reel it end. Finally, he decided to cut the line and not let Sheila know.
After he let the bass go, the narrator was in a daze the rest of the night at the fair. Then, to make things worse, Sheila told him she was getting a ride home with Eric Caswell and his Corvette.
The narrator, now older, is reflecting back on the situation and thinking of how bad of a decision it was.He let a girl get in the way of what he truly loved. He said he never made the same mistake again.
