Jonas is shocked that he has a new baby brother! He will have to take care of him because he is older and more mature. His responsibilities will change drastically!
Jonas noticed that the Giver was very depressed. So, Jonas took in the memory of pain and warfare and quickly became very depressed. But he had to learn eventually. It was part of growing up. Now he has the responsibility of not telling anyone.
Jonas has shared his dream, and it is a sign of Stirrings. This is when he starts taking his pills because he's growing up, and it is now his responsibility.

What were your feelings Jonas?
The giver had given Jonas the memories of the past because Jonas was getting older and he had to learn about it somehow. But the giver told Jonas that the memories are secret and they are sad memories and that it was a sad time when the memories were free in the public. So he has a responsibility of not telling anyone, even though it is very tempting.
Jonas has been selected to be the receiver at his last ceremony, the ceremony of Twelves. This will be his assigned job for the rest of his life because he's getting older and it is now his responsibility.

After Jonas was selected as the receiver, he is handed a sheet of paper saying what he can and cannot do. And on the list it says he is allowed to lie because he has the responsibility of keeping all the memories in his head. But he is growing up so he has to learn to deal with pressure.
