Storyboard Text

  • Cause of war: Ionian Greek city-states decided to revolt against the Persian Empire in 499 B.C.E
  • Ionians:
  • We're revolting!
  • Persians:
  • Oh no...
  • Pheidippides was a runner who warned the Athenians of the incoming Persians. They were able to fight back.
  • Rejoice, we conquer!
  • We know what you Persians are up to!
  • The war at Marathon was between King Darius of Persia and the Athenians.
  • I will avenge you, father!
  • After Darius died, his son, Xerxes, swore to take revenge on all of Greece.
  • For once, Athens and Sparta united to defend themselves.
  • For just this one time... I'll help you.
  • During a battle, Persian King Leonidas lost all his men.
  • What... just... happened...
  • During the battle on Salamis, the Persian ships were much bigger than the Greeks and got trapped in small spaces. The Athenian navy repeatedly smashed into the Persian ships, sinking them.
  • The last battle was the Battle of Plataea. The Athenians and their allies defeated Xerxes' Persian army once and for all, and Persia never invaded again.
  • We won!
  • After the war, Sparta and Athens both took credit of the win. Sparta was very weak and Athens was very strong, becoming the most powerful city-state after rebuilding. Athens created the Delian League: an alliance with other city-states to protect themselves from Persia.
  • The End
