"'You'll find this game worth playing,' the general said enthusiastically. 'Your brain against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Your strength and stamina against mine. Outdoor chess! And the stake is not without value eh?
"Night found him leg-weary, with hands and face lashed by the branches, on a thickly wooded ridge."
The Tiger Pit
"..the dead tree, general delicately adjusted it to rest on the cut living one, crashed down and struck the general a glancing blow.."
General Zaroff wants to play a "game" challenges Rainsford to hide in the wilderness with some useful items for three days to see if he'll last before Zaroff hunts him down. For a man who wouldn't prefer to hunt other men, Rainsford believes this isn't a good idea to play a game dangerous like this. Meanwhile Zaroff considers this as an excellent idea.
"Then, as he stepped forward, his foot sank into the ooz. He tried to wrench it back , but the muck sucked viciously at his foot as if it were a giant leech."
Rainsford's legs become slowly sore and climbs up into a tree, not only to rest his legs but to as well be in search for Captain Zaroff.
The End of the Game
scurrying off Rainsford runs away after Zaroff and his hounds finds him, afraid to get hunted. Rainsford finds tigers and digs a pit quickly scurries away, calling it the "Burmese Tiger Pit. The general fell into the hole and couldn't get out easily until it got deeper.
The End of the Gam
As Rainsford runs away from Gen. Zaroff, he finds himself stuck in quicksand and cannot escape, so he looks for his natural resources or something to help him escape.
Zaroff sees Rainsford at the end of his bed, and decides they'll have a fight where one man where will be fed to the dogs, and one will be in the bed alive. Rainsford knew he was in a kill or be killed situation, so he killed Zaroff, ending the most dangerous game of all.
"'..Get ready, General Zaroff..' 'One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds. The other will sleep in this excellent bed..' And he had never slep in a better bed, Rainsford decided."
