  • Garrett Dziubek Dred Scott Case Block 1
  • Dred Scott was a slave in Missouri for many years.
  • He was sold to Dr. Emerson in 1833, where Emerson took them to St. Louis.
  • When Emerson died, he left the slaves to his wife, Eliza Sanford. The Scotts tried to buy thier freedom from her, but she refused.
  • Scott then sued court, arguing that he and his family were free since they lived in a free state. His claim was upheld, but it was appealed until in reached the Supreme court.
  • Dred lost the case because blacks were not considered citizens, they were considered property. Chief Justice Rodger B. Taney said that because he was not a citizen, he was not able to sue court.
