Garrett Dziubek Dred Scott Case Block 1
Dred Scott was a slave in Missouri for many years.
He was sold to Dr. Emerson in 1833, where Emerson took them to St. Louis.
When Emerson died, he left the slaves to his wife, Eliza Sanford. The Scotts tried to buy thier freedom from her, but she refused.
Scott then sued court, arguing that he and his family were free since they lived in a free state. His claim was upheld, but it was appealed until in reached the Supreme court.
Dred lost the case because blacks were not considered citizens, they were considered property. Chief Justice Rodger B. Taney said that because he was not a citizen, he was not able to sue court.
