  • The march started following the battle of Atlantis, which ended on September 2, 1864. They started the march on Nov. 15- Dec. 21, 1864.
  • The army marched to Savannah, Georgia, stealing food from farmers and burning everything in their path, using the "Scorched Earth" strategy.
  • Tell the President that I have him a Christmas present!
  • The Union cost the Confederacy about 100 million dollars, which amounts to 1,633,050,955.41 today.
  • This march, which captured Savannah, Georgia, secured Abraham Lincoln's re-election.
  • When the Union army got to Savannah, they found it deserted. General Sherman sent a message to Lincoln telling him that it was his Christmas present.
  • Union soldiers would bend railroad ties around trees by heating them up. They became known as Sherman Bow Ties.
