The Narrator is explaining to the reader how he is not crazy. Also the Old Man and the Narrator lives in the same house together. The story takes place eight days (12- 4 am).
The Narrator says he is going to kill the Old Man. For several nights The Narrator watches the Old Man sleep for hours. On the eight night his thumb slipped on the lantern scaring the Old Man and The Narrator doesn't moves for hours and the Old Man sits up startled. He then laughs scaring the Old Man. Then the Narrator opens the lantern in the room hitting right on the Old Man's eye.
The Narrator saw the Old Man's eye and suffocates the Old Man with his own bed.
After the Narrator kills the man he cuts the man's legs and arms. Then hides it under the floor. He then hears a knocking at the door which was the police at 4 am. They came because the got a call of a shirk at night. The Narrator show them around the house. They all sit in the bedroom above the body.The Narrator starts freaking out and thinks he is hear the Old Man's heart.
The Narrator finally confesses that he killed the Old Man to the police.
The conflict is internal man vs. self, person vs. person, person vs. society. The theme is the truth will reveal itself and the power of guilt.
