Lizabeth and her brother are bored and she was convinced to go to Miss Lottie's house. Joey asked Lizabeth if she was" too scared to throw pebbles at Miss Lottie's marigolds" and before thinking of her actions Lizabeth was throwing stones at the blossoms.
Once Lizabeth thought about the childish desicion she had just made she felt ashamed. She had a confusing feeling of thinking it was all harmless fun or a horrible mistake. "The child in me sulked and said it was all in fun." After she saw her father cry she was filled with fear and anger.
She could no longer bare the thoughts she had. Lizabeth marched over to Miss Lottieś marigolds and ripped them out of the ground and destroyed all of them. Once Miss Lottie came out and saw her masterpiece destroyed she looked souless and Lizabeth knew she transitioned into adulthood. "I know that that moment marked the end of innocence."
