Storyboard Text

  • Long Term Causes of the Revolution
  • The members of the Church were part of the First Estate.
  • Estates General
  • The nobility were part of the Second Estate.
  • The rest of France were part of the Third Estate.
  • Tennis Court Oath
  • One major factor in starting the French Revolution were the various wars that France took place in, from the 7 Years War to the Revolutionary War for America, which took money out of the Royal Treasury.
  • Storming of Bastille
  • Because of France's economic problem, King Louis XVI called together the Estates General, the Legislature of France. Each estate, the social classes of France, created their own cahiers, notebooks filled with their personal grievances.
  • Revolution Begins
  • The Third Estate eventually decided that they were not getting equally represented within the Estates General, so they formed their own group, the National Assembly. The king, however, did not approve of this and locked them out of the assembly hall. This did not discourage them, as they met in a local tennis court and vowed the Tennis Court Oath.
  •
  • Rumors spread of the king sending his forces to stop the National Assembly, so on July 14,  1789, Parisians stormed the Bastille, looking for weapons and gunpowder to defend themselves. The commander of the Bastille had his guards open fire, but the Parisians eventually gained control of the Bastille, freeing prisoners and eventually tearing it down.
  • Thus was the start of the French Revolution, a bloody and disorganized revolution which meant a lot to the French, all because of large costs to the treasury and rulers that couldn't limit themselves financially, like advisor Jacques Necker suggested.
