Once upon a time, Kwan-yin a princess, was living happily until one day, her father delivered devastating news. She was to be married at the age of 18!
She decided that she would have to run away from home so she snuck out during the night to a nearby convent.
When she arrived at the convent, the nuns in charge did not receive her kindly. At first they didn't let her in but eventually, after Kwan-yin begged with tears in her eyes, they accepteed her only as a servant meant to do the most harsh and difficult task.
As she was gathering wood, she encountered a tiger. Because she was unarmed, the thought of self defense din't cross her mind. Instead, she uttered a prayer. Surprisingly, the tiger didn't attack her but made a purring sound and rubbed its head against her hand. The next day, she came back to see a dozen beast gathering wood.
The peace however could not last. Her father had sent a army of guards to bring her back to the castle and they had taced her location to the convent.
She was brought to the capital where her father awaited her. There, he gave her a simple ultimatum. Marry the man he chose for her and she would get the throne or be executed if she refused. She wanted to accept his offer but her time at the convent reaffirmed her belief that the gods had set her out for a larger purpose. Her response didn't satisfy her father and he sent her to the dungeons where she was tortured and then killed. She woke up in hell where instead of fire there wee lilies and the fragrance of flowers. Lord Yama was surprised to see Kwan-Yin who was such a pure soul and he sent her to heaven where she became the Goddess of Mercy.
