Dupicate exams should raise a red flag. According to the article "US Technologists’ Radiation Exposure Perceptions and Practices " Sixty-eight percent indicated they always alert the physicians of duplicate orders.
As our tech adjusts the technique for the patient, he sees the physician has order two exams of the same area.
Well the doctor knows best! better do both.
It is important that the patient understands the risks vs. benefits of an X ray exam.
Is this exam dangerous?
Why of course not. The risks vs. benefits are worth it!
Thomas is otherwise healthy 25 year old with a long life ahead of him.
I want to make sure I capture the correct anatomy so centering and SID should be adjusted.
I do not want to shield off important anatomy so I have to repeat.
Better stay safe with the normal technique for an ankle.
Seeing as there is no body habitus chart our tech does not adjust his technique to suit a stick figure part.
Our tech also does not apply shielding, has improper SID, centering is incorrect for the anatomy, and collimation is not used properly
ALARA moment: The risks versus benefit only works if the technologist is following correct protocol.
While trying to save the patient dose, our tech is actually increasing dose to the patient.
I wanted to make sure I didn't have to repeat so I can save patient dose.
