  • Val Ginsburg grew up during the interwar years of WWI and WWII, in a small country called Lithuania. He came from a secular Jewish family of free thinkers who did not believe in organised religion.

  • As a young man, Val dreamed of becoming a pilot, Aviation was his passion, and he loved building model aeroplanes. unfortunately when he was 18, his plans were interrupted by the coming conflict.

  • In the summer of 1940, Russia invaded Lithuania. They enforced communist law, making all landholders and business owners enemies of the state. The Russians' intention was to send them, including Val's family, to slave labour camps in Siberia.

  • One week before they were to be deported, Hitler's army began its assault on Russia. The Germans also swept through and occupied the country of Lithuania. They removed communist law, and as a consequence, Val's family was released from deportation.
  • Now Val and his family had a difficult decision to make: should they flee to Russia, or remain in Lithuania and try their luck with the Germans. After a morning of debate, the fourteen members of Val Ginsburg's family decided that their chances of survival would be greater under the Germans than in communist Russia.
  • After the Invasion, the Germans implemented their anti-Jewish racial laws which preceded the Holocaust. The Nazis banned Jews from public places and made them wear the yellow star of David with the word Jew embroidered on it.
